The Denver Broncos’ struggles were on full display in Russell Wilson’s first season with the team. And it seems like new head coach Sean Payton wants to get things turned around quickly, making a bold decision on Wilson’s status for the team’s first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Wilson struggled in particular in his first season in Denver, throwing for a career-low in passing touchdowns, completion percentage, and quarterback rating last year.
Payton seems dead set on changing that, and his first step in doing so will be getting him and the rest of the Broncos’ offense more reps. According to Mike Klis of 104.3 The Fan in Denver, Payton revealed that Wilson and the rest of the starters will play in their first preseason game against the Cardinals.

Playing starters in the preseason can always be a risky decision as it obviously increases potential injury risk. This naturally had fans pretty mixed on this decision by Payton.

This decision comes after some concerning reports emerged about Russell Wilson struggling severely in practice recently. Wilson reportedly threw two interceptions in practice on Thursday, which prompted a response from Sean Payton when asked about it.
“Yeah, no big whoop. He’s doing fine,” Payton said of Wilson’s practice struggles.
Even though Payton previously said he isn’t worried about Wilson, this decision to play the starters certainly tells another story, wanting to get this Broncos offense as many preseason reps as possible.
