The bearskin caps worn by the Scots Guards do not reflect Scottish people’s morals and values and should be replaced with a humane alternative, a group of SNP MPs has said.
The 17 MPs, including Dave Doogan, the SNP’s defence spokesman, and Carol Monaghan, the spokeswoman for veterans, have written to James Cartlidge, the UK minister for defence procurement, to urge him to replace the caps with faux fur.
In the letter the MPs say they would like to see the Ministry of Defence (MoD) replacing all bearskin but “specifically demand” that the Scots Guards’ caps be replaced.
The letter says: “Scottish people’s morals and values are not reflected in the use of the current ornamental caps made from the fur of slaughtered Canadian bears.
