Extreme temperatures across southern Europe are likely to see tourists swapping the Costa del Sol for the Hebrides and Sicily for the Shetland Islands as holidaymakers search for cooler destinations to spend the summer months.
Scotland is poised to become a choice holiday destination as wildfires and searing heat deter many from travelling to traditional hotspots.
Near-record temperatures of up to 48C were recorded in southern Europe last month as heatwaves led to devastating wildfires.
In a VisitScotland survey, 10 per cent of European tourists said that the climate was a motivator in travelling to the country.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of tourists from Europe has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Last year there were two million visits
