Carmen was also known as the star behind the hit Hungry Eyes popularized in Dirty Dancing and the master behind the theme song for Footloose.

The Raspberries were embraced by a new generation when their 40-year-old single Go All the Way was included on the soundtrack of the film Guardians of the Galaxy.

The singer’s death over the weekend was shared by his wife in a message on his website on Monday.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen,” Amy Carmen wrote.

“Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”

“Please respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss. ‘Love Is All That Matters… Faithful and Forever,’” she finished.

Amy’s message is a nod to Love Is All That Matters, a romantic song from Carmen’s 1977 solo album entitled Boats Against the Current.

The cause and circumstances of his death have not been made public.
