Manchester Giants’ painful start to the season continued in Yorkshire on Friday night.

Head coach Yorick Williams and his men got closer to their opponents than in heavy opening defeats to Glasgow and Newcastle – only a point separated them at 44-43 in the third quarter following Callum Jones’ lay-up.

But, despite a battling effort, they will have to wait until Sunday’s home BBL Cup clash with Cheshire Phoenix (5pm) to try to land a victory at the fourth attempt.

Jones had a game-high 22 points with Jerelle Okoro (16), Donatas Visockis (13) and Williams (11) all chipping in.

But the Giants had nothing in terms of points from the bench and it told.

After leading 22-17 after a quarter and 39-30 at the break, the Sharks were reeled in by the visitors in the third.

But they pulled away again in the third to go into the fourth 59-47 up and hold out for the win.

Kyle Odister led the Sharks’ effort with 20 points.
