It has been rumoured certain parts of the UK will desperately try to retain certain aspects of EU membership once Article 50 has been triggered.

Earlier this month at the SNP party conference, Nicola Sturgeon threatened to blackmail Theresa May’s Government with another independence referendum if Scotland’s access to the single market was not secured.

It has also been touted that London should seek a special Brexit deal which would keep its ‘passporting’ with the EU and protect its financial sector.

But Akash Paun, from the Institute for Government, rubbished the proposals, leaving Sturgeon’s plan in ruins.

He told Newsnight: “I’ve not seen any credible, worked up proposal of how that would work.

“As far as I’m aware, there is no relevant precedent from anywhere else in the EU.

“What we have seen from some other member states is special, bespoke deals for particular territories, normally quite small, isolated islands.”

Mrs May met with the heads of state for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland yesterday to give assurances about what Brexit means for their respective regions.

Following the meeting, Sturgeon described the meeting as “frustrating”.

The SNP leader said: “There was a very frank exchange of views. In parts of the meeting was deeply frustrating.

“I don’t know any more now about the UK Government’s approach to the EU negotiation than I did when I went into the meeting.

“I think we all hoped to have more set out in terms of the high levels principles at least but I got the distinct impression that the lack of detail was because the UK Government does not yet know what it’s trying to achieve.”
