‘They’re hardly KIDS’ Corbyn blasted over speech welcoming Calais migrants to Britain

The Labour leader was branded a “moron” and “delusional” after he used his first address during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions to urge people to “love and support” child refugees who had recently arrived in Britain.

Hundreds of child refugees are set to arrive in the UK over the next few weeks, Home Secretary Amber Rudd has said.

The Home Secretary confirmed arrivals would continue as the Calais Jungle is dismantled and some 800 minors have been interview by Home Office officials over the past week.

But one in four local authorities are said to be refusing to accept responsibility for them – including Theresa May’s own constituency of Maidenhead.

In a show of solidarity with the child refugees, Mr Corbyn said: “Could I start by welcoming the child refugees that have arrived in Britain in the last few days.

“They’re obviously deeply traumatised young people and we should welcome them, love them and support them in the best way we possibly can.”

Theresa May echoed Mr Corbyn’s warm welcome as she commended the Home Office “for the work it has been doing in ensuring that it is working carefully to look at the best interests of the child refugees”.

Mr Corbyn’s statement, however, sparked an avalanche of angry responses on Twitter as the ongoing row over the age of some child refugees continues.

One user wrote: “Corbyn, this will cost you votes.

“The majority don’t want them here and they’re hardly kids. 

“You’re handing the Tories a landslide.”

Another posted: “Yes, welcome the so-called kids.”

A Twitter user said: “Corbyn opens his ‘questioning’ with a big welcome for migrants.

“someone please tell this moron that he’s out of step with public opinion.”

Mrs May also accused the Labour leader of ignoring the will of the British people during PMQs.

Rebuking comments made by Mr Corbyn regarding Brexit, she said: “The leader of the opposition tries to poke fun at the phrase ‘Brexit means Brexit’, but the whole point is this: this Government is listening to the voice of the British people.

“‘Brexit means Brexit’… that mean’s we are coming out of the European Union! What the right Honourable Gentleman is doing is frustrating the will of the British people.”
