‘Idiot’ Paxman BLASTED after accusing Suzanne Evans of having no compassion for refugees

Suzanne Evans, one of the candidates running to succeed Nigel Farage, said it was disgraceful that “grown men” appeared to be entering the UK via the Calais Jungle.

However former Newsnight presenter Paxman berated Ms Evans on ITV’s The Agenda and accused her of having “no compassion”.

His criticism of Evans provoked an angry reaction from watching viewers.

When asked by presenter Tom Bradby if Ms Evans supported dental checks to confirm the age of children arriving from Calais she said: “We have children in this country who are languishing in children’s homes who can’t find foster homes who can’t find adoptive parents – they are there having their lives destroyed and we are taking in grown men from the ‘Jungle’.

“It think that’s absolutely wrong and I think as a matter of principle – I know it’s very difficult to check someone’s age – but we had a vote in parliament of the Dubs agreement to bring in child refugees from the Jungle and they did not vote to bring in men who are clearly not children – who need to buy razors and shave.”

She added: “And I think the British people are really angry about that. We are a compassionate nation and we want to help kids.

“If we didn’t have such uncontrolled immigration perhaps we could take more. How dare we bring in people who are really not the people in most need.”

Angry viewers turned on Paxman over his attack on Ms Evans, with one branding him an “idiot”.

Another asked: “Is this guy for real?”

A third wrote: “Good for her [Evans] – children should mean children! I do not believe a 10-year-old makes their own way here.”

One Twitter user said: “France is not a ‘war torn country’ Refugees supposed to stay in first safe country they get to.”

Children from Calais have been arriving in Britain for over a week however a row has developed with some arguing the children appear older than they claim to be.

Home Office officials insist the children have been subject to rigorous interviews and document checks.

The controversy led to former England footballer and BBC presenter Gary Lineker to voice his opinion, accusing anyone voicing fears over the age checks as “hideously racist”.

Lineker, one of the BBC’s highest earning presenters, was branded a “luvvie” as his comments caused an angry backlash.
