Two dead ‘after being struck by train’ at Balham station in south London

The incident took place at Balham tube station

Emergency services arrived at the station following a “serious incident”.

All transport lines were closed following the incident, which is believed to have happened around 12.30am.

A witness told the Mirror: “It was chaos at the station. Police roped the main thoroughfare off and ordered everyone off the platform and out of the doors.

“The station was surrounded by police cars and ambulances with more screaming down through Balham to get to the scene.

“The station was in complete lock down within just a few moments with no one allowed in or to even get close.

Southern Rail UK tweeted: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident at Balham some lines are blocked.”

Network Rail also tweeted: “#Balham Staff are on site with @BTP and emergency services. Lines are currently blocked. @nationalrailenq.”

TfL Bus Alerts wrote: “Following a serious traffic incident in the Balham area ticket holders on Southern are accepted on buses between London and East Croydon.”

All lines have now been reopened following the incident.

Some trains cancelled or delayed by up to 15 minutes more than four hours after the incident.
