UK to STAY in single market? Business sec lets slip PM’s Brexit negotiating strategy

The Prime Minister has continually said she will not reveal her stance for Britain’s exit from the EU because it weakens Britain’s negotiating position.

Parliament is demanding greater scrutiny amid concerns of a ‘hard’ Brexit which will involve ending Britain’s membership of the European single market in exchange for stricter controls of immigration.

Despite repeatedly saying she will not provide a “running commentary” over negations, the Business Secretary appeared to do just that.

Discussing the government’s agreement with Nissan, Mr Clark told Marr: “There is a lot of trade from the continent of Europe and vice-versa.

“So one of the assurances I was able to give is that our intention, our negotiating remit is to have a constructive and civilised dialogue to look for the common interest here.”

When asked if that meant no tariffs the business secretary replied: “It is no more of the interests for there to be tariff barriers to the continent and vice versa.

“So what I said is our objective would be to ensure continued access to the markets in Europe and vice versa.

“Without tariffs and without bureaucratic impediments.”

Mr Clark’s comments may cause anxiety among ‘hard’ Brexiteers who wish to see the UK sever ties with the single market.

Membership of the single market would almost certainly result in Britain continuing with freedom of movement for EU nationals – a red line for many Leave voters.

Last week one of Britain’s biggest business owners repeated calls for a ‘hard’ Brexit as single market red tape was damaging the UK economy.

Lord Anthony Bamford, chairman of JCB, told the House of Lords: “I want British business to get behind the Government.

“We need the Government to secure an exit deal that is in Britain’s best interests.

“A deal that will allow us to become a truly global trading nation.

“If tariffs are the price we have to pay to leave the EU, well so be it.”
