There’s just no pleasing Remainers – even the idea of a ‘frictionless border’ in Ireland doesn’t help

HERE we go again. Every time the Government comes up with a sensible, serious suggestion for moving towards Brexit, up pops the chorus of doom-mongers.

On Tuesday they were telling us a customs deal with the EU will never happen.

Why do Remainers feel the need to make every Brexit decision needlessly difficult?

Yesterday it was the idea of a “frictionless” border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

“It can’t be done,” they groan.

Except it already is being done.

Norway and Sweden have almost exactly the same arrangement that is being proposed for Ireland.

Hassle-free travel between the two countries for people and goods.

Yes, there is a danger of migrants using Northern Ireland as a back door into the UK.

If Remainers stopped whining and got on with Brexit, we may actually see change for the better

But if we are willing to run that risk, there’s every reason for the Irish to welcome a set-up that will be a huge boon to the Republic.

For the Remainers, everything is always too hard, too impractical or too dangerous.

But instead of the moaning and doom-mongering, we just need a bit of imagination and goodwill.

It’s really not that difficult.

Forbidden truth

IT’S a great shame that Sarah Champion has resigned from the Shadow Cabinet.

As her piece in last week’s Sun showed, she understands that there is a real problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls.

In fact, those were her exact words — and they were correct.

But in some quarters it is still forbidden to talk about such things — and one such place is the Labour Party.

For daring to discuss the truth, the roof fell in on her.

Stupidly, her first reaction was to disown the article.

But when proof emerged that she had in fact been “thrilled” with it — and her only objection was to her picture — she resigned.

All of which proves the point she was making last week: that until we face up to reality, we stand no chance of dealing with the appalling exploitation of white girls.

Clock’s ticking

IT looks as though common sense will prevail and the Big Ben bongs will be saved.

The bongs are one of the defining symbols of our democracy.

There was understandable outrage that they could be silenced on the say-so of health and safety jobsworths.

How long will Big Ben be silent?

Now the Prime Minister has intervened and MPs on all sides have said how horrified they are at the prospect of silence.

Next Monday is Bong Day, when they are due to sound for the last time for four years.

The Westminster authorities now know their duty.

They have four days to act and save the bongs.
