Manchester United travelled to Northampton on Tuesday and Ander Herrera gave supporters some early squad news from on board the team coach.

In an Instagram story posted on his page, Herrera confirmed Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo, Sam Johnstone and Memphis were part of the squad that travelled to Sixfields Stadium for tonight’s EFL Cup tie.

Herrera has started just twice this season against Bournemouth and Feyenoord. Despite performing well in the former fixture, Paul Pogba’s availability and Marouane Fellaini’s impressive August ensured the Basque was demoted.

Mata, substitute in five of his six appearances this term, could be restored to the side and Memphis is yet to start under Jose Mourinho. Marcos Rojo was derided for his woeful performance in Rotterdam last week, while 23-year-old goalkeeper Johnstone has never played for the United first-team and is out of contract next year.

United prepared for their first game against Northampton in over 12 years by training in a Daventry car park on Wednesday morning, just a few miles away from Northampton’s ground.

Mourinho and his players were snapped by a sharp-eyed member of the public warming up for a their clash tonight with League One minnows in surroundings a world away from their state-of-the-art training facility at Carrington.

United host Leicester on Saturday and round off the month with the visit of Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League.
