Doom busters

LABOUR paints Britain as a poverty-stricken ruin. Remainers insist Brexit is an unfolding catastrophe. Why, then, was there a tsunami of good economic news yesterday

Employment at its highest percentage since 1971. Unemployment at historic lows. Average wage rises of 2.8 per cent — higher than the latest inflation figure, now falling to 2.7 per cent. The deficit lower than it has been in a decade.

Mysterious, isn’t it, how all this can happen under the “wicked” Tories who — if you believe Labour’s tripe — “only care about their rich banker friends”?

And despite the looming apocalypse of the Remainers’ fevered imaginations.

Healthy rise

NHS nurses and other staff are overdue a big pay rise. But it is not without risk.

It is right finally to reward those keeping the health service afloat during its toughest period ever. It is also prudent to stop the flood of staff leaving.

We applaud, too, Jeremy Hunt’s new medical schools to train British doctors and nurses and wean us off expensive locums and foreign staff.

But, inevitably, the entire public sector will want the same. We simply cannot afford an across-the-board bonanza.

Our Forces have a case. The rest can wait.

Putin’s toadies

WORLD leaders are matching Jean-Claude Juncker’s spinelessness over Russia.

Against his own aides’ advice, Trump congratulated Putin on “winning” his rigged election. Angela Merkel did too.

Theresa May rightly aims to stiffen resolve today at the EU summit.

Russia’s recent record is indefensible.

It now suggests Britain “staged” the Salisbury attack. This is the regime that assassinated Alexander Litvinenko in London and rewarded the chief suspect.

It now stands accused of hacking a doctor’s computer to expose a secret hospital in Syria which it then bombed.

Russia invades. It cyber-hacks. It tries to destabilise democracies. It commits atrocities, then lies. It is habitual.

The world’s only response should be horror, condemnation and firm action.

Fin argument

THE SNP’s hypocrisy over fish is laughable.

They accuse the Tories of “betrayal” for failing to take back control of our waters until 2021. But the SNP would sacrifice it for good.

They would cancel Brexit if they could and stay in the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. So much for their concern.

Our fishermen’s plight may amuse smug, liberal Londoners, especially after yesterday’s haddock-flinging protest stunt on the Thames, but they are hugely admired outside the capital.

Their right to fish our waters free from miserly Brussels quotas MUST be restored.
