With interest rates showing no signs of improving, investors’
options are limited to only a few avenues which will prove
beneficial in the long term. Property, collectable cars, wine and
art are all good options, but one of the most inviting and
potentially lucrative is watches.
With some Rolex models being worth almost double on the
pre-owned market seconds after they have left the store, it’s no
wonder savvy shoppers are turning to luxury timepieces.
The Rolex Daytona is a prime example of a watch that has shown
considerable price growth over the last few years on the pre-owned
market, with no sign of stopping. With recent ‘high-profile’
Daytonas heading to auction, including one owned by Paul Newman, it
is clear to see why the watch is such a popular choice among
collectors. At Xupes we have seen all of the stainless steel
Daytona references continue to surpass our expectations.
Our best example of this is our Rolex Daytona 16520 ‘Inverted
6’. Not only does this sport the more coveted white dial, it also
features an error on the dial, known to collectors as the ‘Inverted
6’. What is especially rare about this watch also is that it is an
X-serial number, which means that it is one of the first in
production that featured this particular error. It is always
important to look out for subtle differences on watches such as
this which will add considerably to the value of the
timepiece.

While it isn’t always easy discovering an item with such
investment potential, like the ‘Inverted 6’, there are still a
wealth of timepieces that have shown price growth in the last few
years alone. Patek Philippe models are notorious for holding their
value well, while other Rolex models like the Datejust, Submariner
and GMT Masters are examples of watches that would prove a great
potential investment in the pre-owned market, some seeing
year-on-year value increases to date. You can learn more about the
watches that have increased the most over time using this tool.

As with any potential investment there are always a number of
factors to consider before you commit. The pre-owned market has
grown rapidly over the last five years alone and with this growth
comes risks. Fraudulent or stolen goods, poorly serviced watches,
and so-called “Frankenwatches” (which feature cobbled together
parts from a number of watches) are all factors that are worth
considering. And of course it is very important that you are
careful who and where you buy from.
