Sports Direct ranked about Apple in global list
A survey has ranked Sports Direct above Apple
as a company “trailblazing in global commerce”. The index of the
world’s top 30 international retailers puts Mike Ashley’s
controversial chain in fourth place. This ranks it behind Amazon,
Boohoo and Asos, but one place above Apple. Senior executive
Michael Murray said he was “pleased that Sports Direct is starting
to be mentioned in the same breath as other great
companies”.
Blow for Trump as growth misses targets
Donald Trump has been dealt a blow as
America’s economy performed worse than expected in the first three
months of this year. In a US Department of Commerce report, GDP
growth was downgraded unexpectedly to 2% annualised from 2.2%.
Trump has pledged to accelerate growth to levels not seen since
Ronald Reagan’s presidency, which had an average annual growth rate
of 3.5%.
Treasury committee slams BOE on female representation
MPs have warned the Bank of England that it
could block the appointment of male candidates to its policymaking
committees to address a decline in female representation. The
Treasury Select Committee said “progress on this [gender] matter”
needs to be made at Threadneedle Street before the next appointment
of a senior policymaker. The move is being seen as a warning
to governor Mark Carney and chancellor Philip Hammond.
Another win for BAE brings ‘boost’ to UK economy
BAE Systems has been awarded a £20bn contract
to build a new generation of warships for Australia in a move that
Theresa May describes as an “enormous boost” for the UK economy.
Shares in BAE rose by more than 1% following the announcement. The
frigates will be built in Australia. BAE Systems won a £150m tank
contract with the US Marine Corps last week.
Deliveroo courier team wins six-figure settlement
A team of Deliveroo couriers will share a
six-figure payout from the delivery firm in a settlement of an
employment rights claim. The 50 riders argued that they had been
unlawfully denied rights, including the legal minimum wage and paid
holiday. The case follows similar ones involving against Hermes,
Uber, Addison Lee, City Sprint, Excel and eCourier.
