NEWCASTLE are competing for Anderlecht’s Swedish World Cup star Isaac Kiese Thelin.
The striker played in four of the Swedes’ games in Russia earlier this summer.
Thelin, 26, hit 19 goals last season on loan at Anderlecht’s league rivals Waasland-Beveren.
Toon boss Rafa Benitez now wants to sign the former Bordeaux frontman and club officials are claimed to have offered around £5m.
However, Newcastle have to fight off interest from Lokomotiv Moscow, with the Russian champions also eager to land Thelin.
Spaniard Benitez has lamented the Magpies’ lack of transfer activity this summer but signed Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto in a £9.5m deal today.
Benitez hopes he will be handed the entire proceeds from the £22m sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham.
Anderlecht have declared their readiness to part with Thelin, who cost just £1.5m from Bordeaux in 2017.
Thelin has won 24 caps, scoring twice.
The Orebro-born ace began his career with Swedish clubs Karlsunds, Norrkoping and Malmo before Bordeaux signed him in 2015.
Anderlecht bought him from the Ligue 1 club after a spell on loan, and his career took off last team when scoring 19 times in just 33 games for lowly Waasland-Beveren.
Thelin won the Swedish league and Super Cup with Malmo in 2014, and helped Anderlecht to a league and Super Cup double in 2017.
He possesses dual Congolese nationality through his father.
