Donald Trump begins state visit in
London

US President Donald Trump arrives at Stansted Airport this
morning for a state visit to the UK, expected to prompt
demonstrations across the country. Today he will tour Westminster
Abbey and meet Prince Charles and Camilla before attending a state
banquet with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Tomorrow he will meet
politicians.

Chances ‘bleak’ for climbers lost on
Nanda Devi

Hopes are fading for an international team of climbers led by
Briton Martin Moran, who set off to climb the Himalayan mountain
Nanda Devi on 13 May but have not returned to their base camp. A
local official said their chances of survival are “bleak”. The
team, which included four Britons, was trying to reach an unclimbed
summit.

Brokenshire calls on Tory candidates
to pull out

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire is today calling on some
of the 13 candidates to replace Theresa May to pull out, in order
to speed up the race. Brokenshire, who is not standing himself,
wants the least popular candidates to retire before nominations
close next week. He says the Conservatives need to find a new
leader fast.

Liverpool at standstill as team return
to parade

The city of Liverpool was brought to a standstill yesterday by
an estimated 750,000 supporters who took to the streets to welcome
back Liverpool FC with the Champions League trophy. An open-topped
bus carried the team and manager Jurgen Klopp through the city
centre, which was a sea of red flares, red flags and red
confetti.

Caver dies in Yorkshire after 17-hour
rescue

A man died in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday just as rescuers
were ready to bring him to the surface. The un-named caver fell six
metres and fractured his thigh on Saturday. Over the next 17 hours,
94 volunteer rescuers worked a total of 1,626 man-hours to make a
navigable way out of the cave so that he could be removed on a
stretcher.

Anguished letters from ‘paranoid’ Lady
Lucan

A cache of letters written by the late Lady Lucan, whose husband
infamously fled justice after apparently bludgeoning their nanny to
death and attacking his wife in 1974, has been discovered under
floorboards in a house where she once lived. In the letters, Lady
Lucan says she feels “paranoid” after being shunned by her
friends.

Fighter jets escort plane after
13-year-old’s hoax

Two fighter jets were scrambled in Singapore yesterday to escort
an incoming passenger plane because of a bomb threat which local
media say was a hoax perpetrated by a 13-year-old passenger. All
passengers and crew landed safely from the Scoot flight from Cebu
in the Philippines. Police were later questioning the alleged
hoaxer.

Study finds 25 cups of coffee day safe
for heart

Despite previous research which suggested coffee stiffens
arteries, a study of more than 8,000 people in the UK has found
that drinking up to 25 cups a day is no worse for the heart than
drinking less than one a day. The team said they their study
“indicates coffee isn’t as bad for the arteries as previous studies
would suggest”.

‘Kill Tories’ band lose Glastonbury
booking

A band whose lyrics provoked controversy have had their
Glastonbury Festival booking cancelled. Killdren lost the gig over
a song which calls on listeners to “Kill Tory scum, kill Tory scum
… murder them all to the beat of a drum.” The Jo Cox Foundation,
named after the murdered Labour MP, called the lyrics “completely
abhorrent”.

has been criticised as “inappropriate” by the most senior judge in
Northern Ireland, in a case that has highlighted growing concerns
