Brisbane winger Ashley Werner made history on her NRLW debut by biting Jamie Fressard in the rivalry’s opening day 36-18 win over the Sydney Roosters.
Werner became the highlight of the televised game when she was given marching orders midway through the second half for a potential layup.
Fressard had her hand around Werner’s face as she parted, and instantly winced in obvious pain.
Bunker reviewed the incident and will see that Werner had her mouth pressed against her opponent’s arm, leaving referee Wyatt Raymond with no alternative to sending her off.
“Bunker looked at it. The hand goes in the mouth and she squeezes the hand, so she’s gone,” Raymond advised Broncos captain Ali Brigginshaw.
Ashley Werner was sent off for allegedly biting Roosters winger Jaime Fressard.
Werner first aired on Saturday night
“It doesn’t look very good to the eye, but any time you have an arm or a hand around your head and your teeth, you know from experience that it feels like someone is going to bite you,” Broncos coach Scott Prince said.
“It’s a contact game and every time you hit your mouth you feel like you’ve been bitten. We’ll have to see what happens with Fresard’s charge.
Fresard was sure that she had been bitten throughout the arrangement, and she had the means to show it.
“Freeze has a few teeth marks on his arm,” Roosters coach John Strange announced after the game.
“She’s not too happy (about the incident) but we’ll leave it to the judicial authorities. It’s a shame it happened in the game, but Frezzy is fine.
“She has teeth marks on her hand, so I’m not sure if the mouth guard is shaped like teeth. There is quite a bit of blood and teeth marks.
Retired football star Allan Ferguson thought the broadcast was fair.
“It’s a difficult event because (Fresard) had his hand over his mouth for a long time,” Ferguson told Nine.
Werner’s fate now depends on the match evaluation committee assembly on Sunday
“But I think that shot speaks volumes.”
Phil Gould believed Fressard’s reaction to the incident may have contributed to the penalty, but did not believe it was unfair.
“(Werner) has a mouth guard on so I’m not sure how much it would have hurt,” Gould said on Nine.
“But if she’s pressed, it’s got to be upset and that’s one of the things footballers hate. They hate being hammered and they hate biting.
Footy fans took to social media to comment on the departure, with most agreeing it was poor form for the Broncos debutant.
“A bit of Luis Suarez,” declared one Twitter user.
“What a mess,” remarked one.
Other followers sided with Werner, believing that the forearm was planted in her face.
“I kind of sided with the player who put her hand in her open mouth, sorry… The penalty should have been the other way around,” said one.
The Rivals Committee will now decide Werner’s fate.
