Manchester United player ratings: Anthony Martial is back but De Gea disastrous

De Gea

Dropped a clanger for the goal. Usually claims such shots with ease but cost United victory with his error. 4

Valencia

Cautioned early on for a clattering tackle and was inconsistent in attack. Struggled to sustain momentum since an auspicious August. 5

Smalling

Humiliated by Xherdan Shaqiri late in the first-half and could have been tougher up against the occasionally shambolic Wilfried Bony. Seemed jittery at times. 5

Bailly

Relished the physical confrontation with Bony but did not move the ball out of defence quickly enough. Energy helped United late on. 6

Blind

Attacked relentlessly but suffered as his partner Marcus Rashford struggled ahead of him. 6

Herrera

Quick on the transition from defence to attack and showed again just why Mourinho has entrusted him with the holding midfield role. 6

Mata

Mourinho might have found Mata’s best position. Unlucky to come off and, on this form, his exclusion from the Spain squad is utterly unjustified. 7

Mata was unlucky to come off

Pogba

Squandered two gilt-edged chances in the first-half but talismanic in United’s attacks and instigated move that led to breakthrough. 6

Lingard

Justified his start with an excellent first-half which banished his midweek struggles but faded after the pause. Used the ball intuitively and creatively. 6

Rashford

One of the rare occasions his inexperience showed. Glen Johnson dealt with him comfortably and had to switch flanks. Lucky to stay on. 4

Ibrahimovic

Should have buried an early chance but endeavoured to make amends, even threatening from the flank. 6

Subs

Martial Wonderful finish and gave an uplifting performance. 8

Rooney Lucky his slowness led to Martial’s goal. 5

Memphis Mourinho had planned to bring on Fellaini. 5
