Anthony Martial could be emerging from the slump in form that had replaced his Manchester United highs from last season.
The 20-year-old’s super sub strike against Stoke City was his first for Jose Mourinho and was a flashback to the fearless, confident young Frenchman who announced his arrival from the bench against Liverpool with a goal 13 months ago.
“He needs that,” said Mourinho after United’s 1-1 draw.
“It was an amazing goal. He showed very good initiative and he was very confident. So it was good from an individual point of view for him.”
Martial hasn’t started for United since suffering a head and calf injury at Watford five games ago.
The assured on-field striker who lit up Louis van Gaal’s final season misery was not the player Mourinho must have thought he was inheriting when he took over the Dutchman’s job.
While the Reds were on their brief China tour Martial was recuperating after his long United debut campaign following his 2015 transfer window last day £36m shock move from Monaco.
His summer break was also delayed because of international duty with France at the Euros.
The summer hadn’t gone well with the hosts at the European Championships. French boss Didier Deschamps barely played the United hitman.
Martial has also been dealing with a split from his wife and their young son.
It is understood that the player’s head has been pretty much in a whirl ever since.
Mourinho, however, is believed to have been on Martial’s case and challenging the French youngster to prove himself again and to have the strength to fight back and build on his debut term impact.
The iron fist in a velvet glove treatment appears to be starting to have its rewards for United and Martial.
