Pep Guardiola has explained his simple blueprint for winning the Premier League – don’t let the opposition have the ball.

Leicester City claimed the title last season with less possession than all of their main rivals.

Guardiola will not be following suit as he bids to win the league in his first season at Manchester City .

Talking to The Guardian at the launch of Johan Cruyff’s autobiography ‘My Turn’, Guardiola paid tribute to his mentor.

And he said City will aim to take English football’s top prize in a manner befitting the Dutch pioneer.

“This season, to be champions,” Guardiola said. “I need my team to have possession.

“You can lose with possession, but more likely you will lose with less possession. We must do what we believe.

“I believe in possession. I know everyone wants to copy the winner – but in football and sport no one wins forever.”

Of his former Barcelona coach Cruyff, Guardiola added: “I thought I knew about football but when I met him, and I started to work with him, I realised a new world in front of me.

“Most coaches say many things, but what he said was completely different. He taught us, not just me, but a number of players, a new generation.

“He helped us to understand the game and the reason why situations happen.”
