Manchester United youngster Jake Barrett proved he has got the Reds late rescue knack when he came on to snatch an equaliser for the Under-18s.

The defender was brought on as a sub and within minutes had rescued a point for Kieran McKenna’s youth side at Carrington against Sunderland when he scrambled in a 90 minute leveller.

The young Reds were heading for a home defeat when their second half onslaught finally paid off.

Sub Kayne Diedrick-Roberts had seen a late shot crash against the bar and Ethan Hamilton had also gone close with a low drive.

But Sunderland looked like they’d hold out until Barrett pounced on a loose ball to poke home.

It was just reward for a weakened United side who were without DJ Buffonge and Tahith Chong who were both on international duty.

However, driven on by England Under-17s star Angel Gomes United managed to save their goalkeeper Alex Fojticek the embarrassment of costing his side the game.

The Slovakian had made an awful hash of clearing a Sunderland upfield punt from his opposite number and missed the ball completely to set up the first half opener on a plate for Lee Connelly.

Barrett, however, had the last word.
