Squatters who made a derelict city centre pub their home for two months, before being evicted yesterday (Tuesday) – are set to be evicted yet again from their new base across the road.
Bailifs entered the empty Ducie Bridge pub in Corporation Street on Tuesday morning to reclaim the space, which is set to transformed into a NOMA development after a police stand-off.
Security staff working for NOMA told the M.E.N. last night that the squatters had been evicted ‘for their own safety’ – as there is asbestos within the building.
But protesters believe moving them on is a violation of their human rights. One homeless squatter, Christopher Blaine, spent more than 10 hours on top of the pub in protest, before coming down about 7.30pm.
Recap: Protester on roof as police evict squatters from city centre pub
Around 30 squatters, a 19-year-old pregnant woman among them, have called the pub their home for two months.
A number of tents were erected across the road to the pub and there were several people camped out on the grassy site on Tuesday night.
But now, the squatters are set to be forced out once again.
The once iconic pub is set to be transformed into homes, shops and offices as part of the NOMA redevelopment.
We’re at the scene, bringing you the latest.

Bailiffs leave the site
Bailiffs are leaving again now. Thirty minutes gives the squatters until about 4.25pm to leave by my calculations.

30 minutes to leave
Security staff are now arriving.
Security staff arriving at Ducie Bridge where squatters are protesting an evictionBailiffs are speaking to squatters. They are saying they have 30 minutes to leave or they will be committing a criminal offence. If not they will be removed by force.
The bailiffs are saying they don’t need a court order. They say landowners gave reasonable notice and paperwork yesterday.

Slogans written by the protesters
Here’s some more slogans written by the protesters.

A message written on the pavement by squatters being evicted from Ducie BridgeThe second one reads:
“First they evicted us from our home. Now they have hired thugs to evict us from the grass. Welcome to your ethical Co-Op!”
They admit the land belongs to Co-op but claim they have the right to defend themselves under common law.

Bailiffs arriving ‘soon’
I’ve just spoken to some squatters who think the bailiffs will be here “within the hour”

Creating a barrier
Still no bailiffs as of yet.
The camp consists of a large tent, some smaller tents and people’s belongings covered by a veranda.
They are now moving metal cages to the front of the grass as a barrier.

New location
Some of the squatters went to the old Job Centre in Salford yesterday but they were evicted and haven’t been back

Rooftop protester in police custody
Rooftop protestor from yesterday’s eviction Chris Blaine was arrested after coming down, people here told me.
They say he is still at the police station waiting to be processed.
