The M6 has faced heavy traffic after the incident
The incident, believed to have involved five cars, happened on the southbound side of the motorway at about 1.30pm.
One report said the incident involved a medical emergency, but the number of injured and extent of their injuries is not yet known.

A police spokesman said: “We are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the M6 northbound near Junction 31.
“We would urge motorists to avoid the area while we deal with the incident. Thank you for your patience.”

People are stuck inside their cars on the M6
The emergency services including the North West air ambulance are at the scene and a spokesperson from Lancashire police said the delays are expected to last for some time.
Police introduced a rolling road block and halted all traffic at junction 31 around 1.30pm, and have since opened two lanes to traffic.
The motorway is not expected to fully re-open until 4.30pm.

NW Motorway Police tweeted: “M6 is now open. Long delays expected but all traffic is moving.”
Traffic is queued back for several junctions and police have warned families not to allow their children out of their cars, after reports some youngsters had been playing on the hard shoulder.
The incident comes just hours after four car pile up on the motorway at junction 24, near Haydock, this morning.
