The migrant crisis is at an all time high, with the number of illegal people entering Britain

The true scale of the border threat is laid bare in Home Office figures showing how the problem has worsened over time. 

Data released under Freedom of Information guidelines provides a snapshot of the crisis under Labour and the Tory/Lib Dem Coalition. 

On average, 74 “clandestines” were stopped at British border controls on the Continent each day between 2010 and 2015.

Ukip MEP Mike Hookem said in response to the figures uncovered by the Daily Express: “The whole situation is total madness. We need far more investment in the UK Border Force.” 

Tory MP David Davies said: “The figures show the enormous challenge we face trying to keep borders secure and immigration levels under control. 

“They will not come as a surprise and confirm what many of us suspect – that vast numbers of people are trying to migrate illegally into Europe and into the UK in particular.”

Many of those seized launched their bids from the notorious Jungle refugee camp in Calais. 

Today work will start to flatten the shanty town which has become a magnet for economic refugees trying to get to Britain. 

Despite repeated attempts to clamp down the statistics suggest the problem has spiralled out of control. 

The frequency of cross-Channel smuggling attempts shows the threat has rocketed as the European refugee crisis has unfolded.

As French authorities try to remove the camp, violence escalates

The previously unpublished information chronicles the number of failed attempts to bypass border security year by year.

It is thought most attempted to sneak into Britain through Calais but the statistics include “clandestine entry attempts” through Dunkirk and Eurotunnel terminals in Coquelles, Brussels, Lille and Paris. 

In 2011, the first full year that Theresa May was Home Secretary, 9,981 were stopped at the border. But last year the figure stood at 84,088. 

In June, when she was still in charge of the Home Office, Mrs May admitted the migrant crisis “shows no sign of easing”.

However, the problem is thought to be much worse than the figures show as they do not include those who managed to make it here illegally.

Experts estimate that for every migrant caught at least two are successful.

If true, between 2010 and 2015 Britain’s underground population rocketed by 327,276 – more than the size of the city of Nottingham.

Between January and March this year, the latest figures available, there were 9,946 attempts or 110 a day.

Suitcases were handed out to the camp migrants to pack their belongings

The Home Office refused to disclose the number trying to gain entry to Britain on forged documents.

Yesterday British charity workers delivered hundreds of suitcases to the Jungle so migrants could fill up their possessions before the camp is destroyed.

Officials and charity workers spent the day telling refugees they will be evicted.

One official said: “The aim is to give everyone a roof over their heads and we will do everything we can to make that happen.”

The sprawling settlement has exploded in size from an informal community of several hundred to a thriving staging post of 10,000 UK-bound migrants in less than two years.

Last night riot police fired tear gas to quell violence as residents burnt down toilets and hurled stones.

Hundreds of officers are bracing themselves for a violent stand-off today with the anticipated arrival of Leftwing British anarchists from the No Borders group.

Today migrants will be ordered on to buses which will ferry them to around 300 temporary accommodation centres scattered across France.

The fate of around 1,000 unaccompanied children has delayed closure.

The total number of children transferred to the UK has reached 200, according to the France Terre d’Asile charity.

But there is concern adult economic migrants have posed as children.

And there is also a fear that flattening the Jungle will not solve the chaos.

Mr Davies added: “This is an ongoing matter.The demolition may work for a while but sooner or later people will start to filter back to Calais.”

The Home Office said: “We are determined to keep our borders secure and prevent illegal entry into the UK.

“We have invested tens of millions of pounds to bolster security at the ports in northern France.”
