Amazon has withdrawn Allah doormats from sale

The mats – which were also being marketed as dog mats – were being sold through the Amazon website by a number of independent traders.

But they were taken down after the company was bombarded with complaints led by Birmingham City Council member Mariam Khan.

Ms Kahn wrote on Twitter: “These mats are extremely offensive to Muslims and out of order. @amazon @AmazonHelp please remove these from your site immediately.”

She said she contacted Amazon bosses in person to complain and received an apology and a promise that the mats would be withdrawn from sale.

But she also urged her followers on Twitter to add their voices to her complaints in the hope of forcing the online giant to act swiftly.

Anam Hoque said the items were ‘disgusting’, ‘irresponsible’ and promoted ‘hatred’ and ‘islamophobia’.

Moeed Sheikh called the items ‘Disgraceful & Diabolical’, adding: ‘shame on @amazon & @AmazonHelp for selling these door mats’.

Amazon’s terms and conditions prohibit the selling of items “that promote or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual or religious intolerance or promote organisations with such views” and reserves the right to remove those items that do not comply. 

The doormats row erupted as Amazon released its Christmas television advert promoting ‘inter-faith selfnessness’ and depicting a Christian vicar and Muslim cleric buying each other knee-pads so that they can both pray more comfortably.
