Gove blasts David Cameron’s experts for “submitting” to his authority

Michael Gove, a leading Brexit campaigner, said the academics from organisations like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who “called the euro and the Referendum wrong” were “meekly submitting to authority” as if they were servants of a ‘Catholic rule’.

During the final debates before the referendum vote, Gove made the renowned statement, “I think the people of this country have had enough of experts”, which has since rocked the political landscape.

Shortly after his comments on Sky News, Ed Miliband tweeted: “Michael Gove should be ashamed: comparing experts critical of Brexit to Nazi scientists is vile and repulsive.”

Refusing to back down on his former stance, Gove said he found it irritating that people assumed his statement was a “blanket rejection” of facts, evidence and rigour.

Instead, Gove told BBC Newsnight’s Ian Katz that he had wanted the public to develop their own “capacity for critical thinking”, instead of relying on those who worked for esteemed organisations.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight’s Ian Katz, who praised the former secretary for his renowned “linguistic rigour”, Gove said: “I thought at the very least we should challenge arguments, rather than saying, ‘Oh well because you’re a tenured academic, or because you work for the IMF, you must be right’

“My argument is actually, many of those who were making assertions on the remain side relying on those meekly submitting to authority as though we were still operating in the age of the pre-reformation of the Catholic church rather than actually making proper arguments.”

Gove a comments come after a Cameron insider revealed David Cameron still cannot talk to his former colleague as he betrayed the former Prime Minister during the Brexit campaign.

A close friend of Mr Cameron said: “There may come a time when the frost thaws but David was hurt by what he viewed as Gove’s ‘Brutus’ behaviour.

“And Samantha takes the same view as David, of whom she is very protective.”
