Donald Trump warns Kim Jong-un that the US will not tolerate a nuclear test

Tensions between North Korea and the US have threatened to boil over in recent weeks, and Donald Trump has now reiterated he will not cower away from the communist dictator.

The US President said: “People are saying, ‘Is he sane?’ I have no idea.

“But we have a situation that we just cannot let – we cannot let what’s been going on for a long period of years continue.”

He added: “If he does a nuclear test, I will not be happy.

“And I can tell you also, I don’t believe that the president of China, who is a very respected man, will be happy either.”

Despite North Korea’s failed missile blast on Saturday, President Trump has warned that Kim Jong-un is a “pretty smart cookie” who will eventually build a better delivery system.

He added: “Perhaps they’re just not very good missiles. But eventually, he’ll have good missiles.”

“He will have a better delivery system. And if that happens, we can’t allow it to happen.”

The missile reportedly blew up just seconds after take-off, increasing speculation that the US military has been causing North Korea’s recent failed missile launches.

When asked if the US was to blame for Pyongyang’s failed blast, President Trump remained coy.

The Republican said: “We shouldn’t be announcing all our moves. It is a chess game. I just don’t want people to know what my thinking is.

“Well, I didn’t say, ‘Don’t test a missile’. But he understands we’re not going to be very happy.”

He added: “Frankly, this should’ve been done and taken care of by the Obama administration, should’ve been taken care of by the Bush administration [and] should’ve been taken care of by Clinton.”

Speaking about how the US plans to work with China, Mr Trump added: “I happen to think that China does have reasonably good powers over North Korea.

“They certainly don’t want to see nuclear on – from their neighbour.”

He added: “Now, if China can help us with North Korea and can solve that problem, that’s worth making not as good a trade deal for the United States, excuse me, right?

“Trade is very important. But massive warfare with millions, potentially millions of people being killed? That, as we would say, trumps trade.”
