The Conservative MP faces competition from Sir Vince Cable in Twickenham, after the Liberal Democrat lost his seat in the 2015 General Election.

Speaking to voters on the doorstep, Ms Mathias urged people to trust the Prime Minister or risk ending up with a Labour government.

She added: “I do believe if I am part of the team, part of the party in power, I will represent our interests well.

“Without me you have someone on the opposition benches, that person won’t be heard.”

He said: “I think people around the country are beginning to realise is a Conservative majority are not in question but a Conservative landslide means they will take you for granted wherever you live.

“I think the most important thing for any leader is clarity. Clarity number one is to be honest with you and everybody else.

“We all know it’s the truth – the Prime Minister is heading for a colossal coronation on June 8. Let’s not pretend there is going to be any hung-parliament anyway.

“She expects all the people to turn up in their Sunday best and wave a flag – that is not how democracy works. We are determined to turn the coronation she expects into a contest that Britain desperately needs.”
