Leanne Wood was accused of not accepting the will of the Welsh people as she plans to fight to keep Wales in the single market after Brexit.

The Plaid Cymru leader claimed Wales will apply for single market membership after Brexit and take on a “Norway-style” relationship with the EU.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, Neil attacked the Brexit stance of Plaid Cymru, insisting they were rejecting the views of the Welsh people.

He said: “It’s hard to see how Wales could stay in the single market but the rest of the UK couldn’t.

“But it is not really any different, I mean Norway you cite, that has free movement. It effectively has to accept the jurisdiction of the European court.

“It’s not in the customs union so it can do some of its own free trade deals.”

The Plaid Cymru chief then claimed that Wales would have to “accept free movement” if the country attempted to rejoin the single market.

Neil was enraged by the suggestion from Ms Wood, as the Welsh people voted to leave the European Union and to put an end to the free movement of people.

He added: “But the Welsh people voted to leave!”

Ms Wood snapped back: “We have to accept the principle of free movement if there’s not going to be a hard border between the north and south of Ireland.

“There is going to be free movement within Ireland and so therefore, freedom of movement, as we said in the referendum campaign, would be very very difficult to actually bring about.”

Neil insisted that Plaid Cymru “lost the EU referendum campaign” and that the party was not putting the interests of the Welsh people first.

He said: “Wales voted to leave, 17 council areas voted to leave, only five voted to remain.

“29 constituencies voted to leave, only 11 voted to remain. Doesn’t this explain why your party is going nowhere.

“The majority in Wales voted to leave. But you effectively want to thwart that and de facto, remain in the EU.”

The Conservatives are historically leading the polls in Wales ahead of Labour and Plaid Cymru, however Ms Wood insisted the party was reflecting the interests of the Welsh people – and that they had accepted the result of the EU referendum.

She fumed: “No I don’t accept that, we have accepted the result, but Plaid Cymru now is all about defending Wales.”
