The US has ordered Russia to close its consulate in San
Francisco and two trade missions in Washington and New York, giving
diplomats until Sunday to comply.
“The US State Department’s announcement was the latest in
tit-for-tat measures between the two countries that have helped to
drive relations to a new post-Cold War low,” ABC News reports.
In July, Moscow ordered the US to slash its diplomatic and
technical staff in Russia by more than 50 per cent, expelling 755
people, in response to fresh US sanctions over interference in the
2016 presidential election.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the order to
cut US staff by Moscow was “unwarranted and detrimental to the
overall relationship between our countries”. With the latest
closure orders from Washginton, “both countries will remain with
three consulates each”, she said.
According to the BBC, “no Russian staff would be required to leave the
country” when the consulate and trade missions close.
“The US isn’t expelling any Russian officials this time,”
confirms the Associated Press. “Those who work at the
shuttered offices can be reassigned elsewhere in the United
States.”
