in search for HIV cure

The cancer drug nivolumab has sparked hopes of a cure for HIV,
after a 51-year-old HIV-positive man who was being treated for lung
cancer showed a dramatic improvement in his condition.
The man, who has had HIV since 1995, was given the drug after
relapsing less than six months after surgery and chemotherapy for
his tumour, according to a study published in the Annals of
Oncology.
“The man then showed a dramatic reduction in reservoirs of
HIV-infected cells and increased activity from CD8 ‘killer’
T-cells, a key immune system attack weapon,” The Guardian says.

According to The Independent, the drug “appears to be able
to target the ‘latent reservoirs’ of HIV-infected cells that
prevent the virus being wiped out, requiring life-long
treatment”.
The study’s authors say the discovery is “potentially exciting”,
but have urged caution as this is a single instance of the drug
acting in this way.
“This is the first case of such a drastic decrease of the HIV
reservoir (but) we have…another case where there was no
decrease,” Professor Jean-Philippe Spano told Reuters.
