FORMER French president Nicolas Sarkozy was last night facing trial and prison after being charged with corruption offences related to £42million in illegal payments from Colonel Gaddafi.
Sarkozy, 63, faced 27 hours of questioning by police in a Paris suburb.

Ex-Libyan dictator Gaddafi, killed in 2011, is said to have provided the illegal cash to propel Sarkozy to power in 2007.
Sarkozy had been allowed home to be with his third wife, ex-model Carla Bruni, yesterday but was charged soon after.

Charges include passive bribery, illegal campaign financing and receiving Libyan public funds. He denies any wrongdoing.
French law bans candidates from receiving cash payments above £6,300. The donation is said to have been laundered through accounts in Panama and Switzerland.
