A group of Central Americans that have travelled in convoy to
the US to seek asylum have been held on the Mexican side of the
border.

Nearly 200 of the migrants, many of them travelling with
children, arrived at the San Ysidro port of entry in San Diego on
Sunday, to be told by US Customs and Border Protection that the
border post was at capacity and unable to process any more
people.

A number of people associated with the Pueblo Sin Fronteras
Caravan have “illegally crossed the border by climbing over a
scrap-metal fence on either side of the port of entry”,
says The Wall Street Journal, leading to their
arrest.

The migrants have spent nearly a month travelling through Mexico
to the US border to seek asylum “in a direct challenge to the Trump
administration”, the Associated Press says.

Under US law and international treaties, US border officials are
required to allow people who say they are afraid to return home to
submit an application for asylum.
