It’s that time of year when pooches and politics
intersect for one glorious day. In recent years, posting photos of
dogs outside polling stations has become a British electoral
tradition on a par with paparazzi shots of party leaders preparing
to cast their votes.
Local election polls: when are the results out and
who is tipped to ‘win’?
Dog lovers rejoiced as voting in local elections around the UK got underway this
morning:
It’s voting day again – one of Twitter’s
best days of the year #dogsatpollingstations pic.twitter.com/2beWCvISKT— Diniel (@DrDiniel) May 3, 2018
Remember: If you don%u2019t take your dog to the polling
station and tweet a picture of them, your vote doesn%u2019t
count.
The #dogsatpollingstations hashtag was trending
harder than ‘Election Day’ on UK Twitter this morning (although
those despairing for the state of political discourse can take
comfort that #PollingDay and #LocalElections2018 both ranked
higher).
Before the doors had even opened, voters were
uploading photos under the hashtag, both of their own dogs and cute
pooches spotted outside polling stations around the UK:

Yep, I might need some help
Some cats even got in on the act, too:
Time for one of those truly awful days in
the calendar
The #LocalElections means Twitter will be overrun
with pictues of #DogsAtPollingStations

And, predictably, there were more than a few
groan-worthy gags as users contemplated their pets’ political
affiliation:

the polling station and is looking for a party that are tough on
cats and the causes of cats and removing tax on tennis balls

This is Olivia. She will be voting for the
LiBorkral DemNoCats and the Greens (due to their pro-squirrel
policies) in Lewisham. #DogsAtPollingStations pic.twitter.com/L2oFeiQbh9— Dave Briggs (@xtaldave) May 3, 2018
