England and Australia will look to prove their critics wrong
when they play in the first match of the one-day international
(ODI) series today at The Oval.
Performance of Cats interrupted by dog
Eoin Morgan’s England side, who are top of the world ODI
rankings, will aim to bounce back from Sunday’s humiliating defeat against Scotland while Australia
look to restore pride after the ball-tampering scandal in March.
Today’s day-night match, which starts at 1pm, is the first
of five ODI fixtures between the two rivals. They will also play
one Twenty20 match on 27 June before England face India in the
summer series.
While England reflect on the defeat to Scotland, the
series is a huge one for Australian cricket. The ball-tampering
saga against South Africa saw skipper Steve Smith, vice-captain
David Warner and Cameron Bancroft banned and ultimately led to the
resignation of coach Darren Lehmann.
The Baggy Greens will be captained in the series by Tim
Paine while former batsman Justin Langer has been appointed as the
new head coach. The duo have a huge job on their hands to regain
the support of their fans and earn back respect from the
international cricket community.
Despite the controversy surrounding Australia’s conduct
against South Africa, England skipper Morgan says his side will not
sledge their opponents and will shake hands before the
match.
Morgan told the BBC: “We play our cricket pretty hard, positively and
aggressively, so we’ll continue to do that. It’s important for the
game to have a strong Australia side – we’re more than happy to
shake hands if that creates a different image for people.”
