Almost 1.5 trillion tonnes of Antarctic ice has melted in the
past five years, a similar amount to that lost in the previous 20
years.
The rapid increase in the melting rate is described by a team of
international scientists in a paper published in the
journal Nature today. The meltwater is
raising sea levels by 0.6mm per year, it says.
The Antarctic ice sheet would raise global sea levels by 58
metres in the unlikely event that it melted entirely.

Nevertheless, says Australia’s ABC, “melting in Antarctica has jumped
sharply from an average of 76 billion tonnes per year prior to
2012, to around 219 billion tonnes each year between 2012 and
2017”.
The increasingmelt rate means nations have “a short window –
perhaps no more than a decade” to cut greenhouse gas emissions,
says The Washington Post, and is “leaving low-lying
cities and communities with less time to prepare than they had
hoped”.
