THE confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson concluded its third day on Wednesday, following an emotional moment for Sen Cory Booker.
The Senator spoke after some Republican representatives called some of Judge Jackson’s past work into question.
“You have sat with grit and grace and have shown us extraordinary demeanor,” Sen Booker said of Judge Jackson, who wiped away tears as he spoke.
The Senator went on to reflect on how the judge’s confirmation will make history and said, “Nobody’s going to steal that joy.”
Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden, and would be the first black woman on the Supreme Court if confirmed.
On Monday, Senator Graham stormed off after bringing up detainees at Guantanamo Bay and Senator Cruz questioned Jackson about critical race theory during the proceedings.
But barring a significant misstep by the 51-year-old Jackson, a federal judge for the past nine years, Democrats who control the Senate by the slimmest of margins intend to wrap up her confirmation before Easter.
“During this hearing, I hope that you will see how much I love our country and the Constitution and the rights that make us free,” Judge Jackson said to the committee.
Last year, Jackson won Senate confirmation for the DC-based appellate court by a 53-44 vote, with three Republicans supporting her. It’s not clear how many Republicans might vote for her this time.
