UKRAINE’S President, Volodymyr Zelensky, says Russian troops ‘are mining the whole territory’ as the country’s defence ministry accuses Russian forces of using civilians as ‘human shields’.
Russian forces have left mines in homes and corpses near Kyiv, despite carrying out a “slow but noticeable” withdrawal from northern Ukraine, Zelensky has claimed.
The President also said that as the troops are retreating: “They are mining the whole territory. They are mining homes, mining equipment, even the bodies of people who were killed.
He added that such action was a “complete disaster” for the areas affected.
Ukraine’s defence ministry has also today accused Russian forces of abducting civilians and using them as “human shields” to protect their columns of equipment.
The Defence of Ukraine said in a tweet: “Russia increasingly uses civilian hostages as human shields. Occupiers protect their columns of equipment with abducted residents of captured Ukrainian towns and villages.
“According to Ukrainian ombudsman, Russians don’t mind hiding even behind children.”
