AN URGENT warning has been issued to EV drivers over a little-known problem which could cost you £15,000.

The lifespan of an electric car varies from brand to brand, however most manufacturers have a five to eight-year warranty on their battery.

The current prediction is that an electric car battery will last from 10 – 20 years before they need to be replaced.

You can extend the lifespan of most EV batteries by keeping them charged between 50 per cent and 80 per cent as much as possible.

How long it takes to charge an electric car also depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point.

It could take anything from 30 minutes to 12 hours depending on these factors.

Many manufacturers are offering electric car battery warranties.

Nissan and Toyota, offer an eight-year – or 100,000 miles – warranty on their electric car batteries.

But how much is it to replace them?

You’ll have to put your hand in your pocket for as much as £15,000, according to Top Gear.

It comes as a motor expert tested new electric vehicles by driving them until they died and everyone’s favourite left him stranded.

Carwow‘s Mat Watson wanted to test out the range claims of the six vehicles which the manufacturers said could cover the most miles.

Watson was looking to reveal what the “realistic” range of the electric vehicles were.

The car expert put a Volkswagen ID Buzz, Mercedes EQA, Nissan Ariya, Audi Q4 Sportback, Genesis GV60 and Tesla Model Y Long Range, through their paces to find out.

Tips to keep your battery healthy

Keep your car at an average temperatureExtreme hot or cold temperatures can affect the battery’s lifespan.
Avoid fast chargersA slow charge will always be better for your car in the long run.
Don’t rushAvoid charging your car straight after a long drive.
Instead give the batteries chance to cool down first.
