Rebecca (@dollartreedinners) shared the recipe with over 1.2 million TikTok followers.
“Last week, I intended to make a Dollar Tree version of a popular dessert called Christmas Crack and it was a fail,” she said.
Despite the setback, she was able to tweak the recipe so that it worked with Dollar Tree buys.
Not only that, she also tried 12 different variations of the recipe to share the best version.
For variables, she picked up four different types of crackers for the base: saltine, Ritz, Graham crackers, and pretzels.
Next, she picked up three different types of chocolate: two bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips, two bars of milk chocolate, and two bars of dark chocolate.
Once the ingredients were acquired, she filled up a tray lined with parchment paper with her bases, taking up a quarter of the sheet with each type.
She explained that she added more brown sugar to the original recipe she found to make it work, resulting in a 1:1 ratio of brown sugar to margarine sticks.
She melted two sticks of margarine with two cups of brown sugar and let it boil over medium-high heat for 45 minutes.
She dribbled the mixture over the base and spread it out thinly over the crackers.
Next, she placed the baking sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for seven minutes and removed it from the oven, placing her chocolate layer immediately over the top.
After letting the chocolate sit for a few minutes, she spread out the melted chocolate into an even layer and placed the tray in the fridge for two hours.
After trying all twelve variations of the dessert, she came to a conclusion.
“My conclusion is that they were all very good, I like the ones with dark chocolate as I personally like a balance with the sweet and salt,” she said.
“My least favorite would be the Graham crackers with milk chocolate because it was a little bit too sweet.”
The beauty of the snack, Rebecca added, was that it can be easily replicated by anyone with their choice of variation to suit their taste palate.
People took to the comments to share their thoughts on her experiment: “This kind of dedication is what we appreciate about you,” said one commenter.
“I love how you test all these different recipes so that people who can’t afford 12x the ingredients don’t have to,” agreed another.
“You are so incredibly thorough. You’re amazing at what you do!” said a third.
