The three-time Conservative leadership candidate was applauded by Labour and SNP MPs after he gave a ten minute speech about the positives of the European Union – to the disgust of his fellow Tories.
Mr Clarke described sarcastically the “great new future which offers tremendous opportunity.”
He said: “Apparently you follow the rabbit through a hole and you emerge in a wonderland where suddenly countries throughout the world are queuing up to give us trading advantages and access to their markets.

To laughter from opposition MPs, he added: “Don’t let me be too cynical. I hope this happens. No doubt somewhere there’s a Hatter holding a teaparty.”

Mr Clarke predicted the country would suffer “losses” due to Brexit and it would be “children and grandchildren” who would suffer.
He said “sensible countries” shouldn’t even have referendums and called for the will of more than 17 million Leave voters to be ignored.
Mr Clarke added the world was “baffled” by the UK’s decision to quit the bloc.
He said “every friend of the United Kingdom across the world” is scratching their head.
