Next URGENTLY recalls children’s shoes over serious fears they could cause cancer

Next has recalled some boys’ brogues over cancer fears

The British high street giant asked customers to return its Younger Boys Navy Brogue Shoes last week.

They said the shoes did not meet the company’s “technical specifications”.

It has now been revealed an Australian watchdog raised concerns the lining of the shoes contain benzidine, which, if it comes into lengthy contact with skin could cause cancer.

The shoes – with item number 964786 (UB/489) – were available across the UK, online and in store, as well as worldwide.

They were sold between December 19, 2016, and June 26 this year.

Next urgently recalled the shoes after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission brought up their concerns.

In a statement, the Commission said the product’s lining “contains a quantity of benzidine which could have carcinogenic properties if in prolonged contact with the skin. 

“Expert authorities classify benzidine as a carcinogen and recommend that exposure be limited”.

Children have been told to stop using the shoes immediately.

On its product recall page on the website, Next said: “Unfortunately, it’s come to light that there’s a potential problem with the lining of the above style which contains a quantity of restricted substance which exceeds Next’s specification.

“As the shoes don’t meet our strict, technical specifications, we’ve taken the decision of recalling them, and are requesting that you return them to us for a full refund.

“Please call us on 0333 777 8185 to arrange a collection, or return the shoes to your local store, if this would suit you better.

The Australian watchdog alerted Next to the concern

“If you have given this item as a gift, please ask the recipient to contact Next.

“We’re very sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience caused, but we hope you’ll understand that customer safety is our highest priority.”

Earlier this year Next was forced to recall more children’s shoes from its Younger Girls range after they found rivets on the white girls’ sandals were a choking hazard.

A statement on its website said: “Unfortunately, it’s come to light that there’s a potential problem with the star rivets, which could become detached, presenting a choking hazard to young children.

“As the sandals don’t meet our strict technical specifications, we’ve taken the decision of recalling them, and we’re requesting that you return them to us for a full refund.”
