Four of the UK’s multimillion pound F-35B Lightning II fifth
generation stealth fighter jets have touched down on British
soil.
The BBC says
the jets, which cost £92 million each, “made the 3,000-mile journey
across the Atlantic from a US Marine Corps base in South Carolina”,
where they had been in use as training aircraft for RAF and Royal
Navy pilots.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier said the jets’ arrival
marked “an historic day”, adding: “This is the future of our air
power for decades to come, so this is a tremendously important
day.”
The jets will be stationed at RAF Marham in Norfolk, where they
will be part of the recently reformed 617 squadron, which is
nicknamed The Dam Busters after a famous World War II mission
members of the squadron flew.
The Guardian says that five more F-35 jets are
due to arrive at RAF Marham “by the end of July or beginning of
August”.
